February 2022 Newsletter

We received some great Valentine’s Day gifts from our IBM i’s all over the world, I think it was how we treated them, but is it because at iTech Solutions we know what to do, when to do it, and how to do it when it comes to IBM i? That is a good reason. Just so you know, our feelings are mutual, as we love our IBM i machines as well. Maybe it was our red shirts for valentine’s day?  In either case, you know when dealing with iTech Solutions your IBM i will be in good hands.

I was talking to someone at beginning of last week about hard work, and I said you know when you love what you do, it doesn’t feel like work day in and day out.  I truly believe that I don’t think there is a different job that I would want than being an IBM i System Administrator.  You want to know what, I think everyone here at iTech Solutions feels the same way.

Have you been enjoying the Olympics?  I have, it’s great to watch the athletes competing against one another.  Some of the events are just mesmerizing, watching the speed of skiing, the height of a jump, muscle control, or endurance of the athletes. One sport that I just don’t get being an Olympic sport is curling.  I don’t know, it doesn’t seem as skillful as going down a mountain at 85 MPH with two boards attached to your feet. I guess to each their own.  Now that the Olympics are over, we have to wait 2 more years for the summer games, and 4 for the winter games. What are you going to do with your time? Perhaps, it’s not a bad time to think about shoring up the security of your IBM i. I am amazed at how vulnerable people’s systems are, and you don’t want to be the next Equifax. Security is a bigger challenge than most people realize, and you should do a security review to see what vulnerabilities exist before someone else exposes them. Too bad they didn’t have IBM i Olympics, I would love to put the iTech team up against all the other teams.

So, what else is going on at iTech?

We hired another System Admin in January, Steven Jenks who brings a great set of skills with him.  In addition, as I am writing this article, another new IBM i Admin started today, Jim Carlin. Jim has extensive IBM i experience as well, so welcome both Steven and Jim to the team.  We are growing, doing more Managed Services for customers, as well as many many more IBM i projects, upgrades, security, and installs.  We will continue to broaden our IBM i skills, enhance any shortfalls, and embrace new technologies as they relate to IBM Storage and Power Systems for the remainder of this year. I could safely say, probably for 2023 as well, as we have no plans to change our focus.

What should IBM i clients be looking at in 2022?

Having a good security plan, backup strategy, OS & PTF Upgrade strategy, cloud options, disaster recovery, and high availability are no longer nice to have, but requirements. When you add encryption, look at performance improvements, single sign-on, hands-free tape operations, Rolling out new versions of ACS, dealing with the next Log4i, or learning about new features and functions, the average IBM i shop can quickly become overwhelmed.  This is where iTech Solutions can help you. Whether it is a block of hours, bringing us in for an individual project, or having us as your technical support team, we are here to help in so many ways.  We have the knowledge, experience, and know-how to help you with any IBM i project. Start the year off on the right foot, and give us a call.

It’s time to get back to seeing people face to face…

I am getting tired of “Zoom” calls for meetings. We are planning on quite a few events for 2022.  Yes, we will continue all our webinars, but we are going to try and get to some in-person events as well.  People need to see and talk to people in person, not just on video cameras. From baseball games with the Michigan WhiteCaps, New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Schaumburg Boomers, and Worchester WooSoxs, to customer-only events, attending in-person conferences, and some roadshows. We already have quite a few in-person speaking & exhibiting engagements planned like WMCPA in March, NEUGC in April, COMMON in May, and COMMON Europe in June.  I am looking forward to seeing existing customers and meeting new ones.

Make sure to save the date for our 2-Day iAdmin Spring 2022 event, being held May 4th and 5th We are looking at about 25 sessions over 2 days, that we hope to educate not just our customers but the entire IBM i community in System Administration.  Over the last two years, our four 2-day events have had a combined attendance of over 3,100 people.

Don’t forget 2022 is also going to be an exciting year for all IBM i customers, with IBM has stated that the next version of the operating system will ship this year, as well as the low-end Power10 machines, will ship this year as well.  Let me tell you, there is nothing low-end about these next machines.  Be prepared to be impressed when IBM unleashes the wraps this year as promised.
