April 2022 Newsletter

Well from reading Steve Will’s blog this month, we know the next release of IBM i is very, very close to being announced. That is great news for IBM i customers. There are a lot of really cool features that have been added to this next release, and I can’t wait to tell you all that I know on Announcement day. In fact, we will show you just how easy it is and everything you need to know to upgrade to the next release of IBM i as soon as it is announced. I think the other benefit for the whole community, is that the roadmap gets updated and we will still have at least 2 more releases of IBM i still to come out after the one this year. That pushes IBM i support probably out to around 2035ish by simple math applied to the current schedule.

Just tell me one other operating system that you know of with a lifeline that long? I just don’t understand how people can call this legacy, or that IBM i is going away. Look at the facts that we have now, and read everything that comes out on announcement day. You will once again know that you made a great decision choosing IBM i.

OMG, it was great to see so many customers, have face to face conversations, and just be back to as close to what normal used to be.  We were in Wisconsin for the WMCPA conference in March, then Northeast User Groups (NEUGC) April 11-13 in Framingham, and next we will be at COMMON’s PowerUp22 in New Orleans May 23-27th.  I know the entire team is excited to talk and meet everyone.  We meet so many people at WMCPA and NEUGC, and a lot of our customers were wearing their iTech Red shirts for the event.  It was great to see you all !!!!!!!

COMMON is in about a month, for a list of the sessions that, Yvonne Enselman, Nilofur Kahn, Richie Palma, Steve Pitcher, and I are presenting at COMMON PowerUp 2022 in New Orleans visit our POWERUp Resource Page.

I am also looking forward to speaking in Alicante Spain for COMMON Europe with a bunch of System Management topics.

Don’t forget the biggest event of the spring…

…the iTech iAdmin 2022 Spring Conference, May 4th and 5th.

Over the last two years, our four 2-day events have had a combined attendance of over 3,100 people. Reserve those dates now on your calendar. May 4th and 5th.

May the fourth be with you as they say, but really once you have iTech Solutions on your side, you have all the “Power” you need. We had met Yoda once in a galaxy far, far away, and he said pointing to iTech “The force is strong with that one”.

Back to iAdmin, we will have approximately 24 sessions over 2 days, with an action-packed agenda.  You can expect sessions on IBM i System Administration to improve your skills, provide insight into new technologies, hear what is going on inside the IBM i world, and gain knowledge to make you a better IBM i System Administration. This is a $1,000 a person conference that we are giving to the community for free.  Why? Well for a few reasons.  We want to support the community that supports us.  We want people to improve their skills and have more job security.  If people know what and how to do various functions on their IBM i, then they will get a better return on their IBM i investment, and most likely keep their IBM i.  After all, that is what everyone wants, more IBM i shops, and for current IBM i customers to stay on the platform.  Of course, showcasing the skills of our technical staff will be on display as well.  I have an amazing team, and it is always nice to hear them present.  I learn from them each and every day, this is your chance to take advantage of their knowledge.  I highly recommend registering before we fill up.  Those that have registered, will be receiving a package in the mail for iAdmin filled with goodies.  I am also seeing lots of activity in the office for a 2nd mailing that is going out to those registered, with a “popping” surprise to surely delight you.  Register early before all the kits and surprises are sent.

Security is still a hot topic for many customers

and it should be at the top of everyone’s minds.  I know just this last Friday, we had one of our customers have a ransomware attack on their company. Luckily, they had followed Steve Pitcher’s advice, and their IBM i stayed safe and secure. As Steve and I were talking this morning, people need to get their heads of out the sand, people can very easily be secure, but if you do nothing, you aren’t secure and are vulnerable to an attack. Don’t let that be you. If you don’t know how secure you are, contact us for a security assessment, the job you save may be your own. I have always talked about the value of backups, and I can’t reiterate now how they are more important than ever. Remember, if you get hit with a cyber-attack, we can only recover what you save. Your recovery is only as good as your backup, and if you aren’t backing up your system completely, you won’t be able to recover. Do you know, that 40% of businesses that suffer a disaster, fail to reopen?  Read that statistic again, because 40% is a very high number.

2022 Baseball Games

With the weather getting warmer, I am looking forward to some baseball games in June and meeting both customers and non-customers at the games.  They are always so much fun, and we were doing these before COVID, and we want to get back to the games. We have games scheduled with the following teams:

  • Schaumburg Boomers – Tuesday, June 7, 2022
  • Michigan Whitecaps – Wednesday, June 8, 2022
  • Worcester WooSox – Tuesday, June 21, 2022
  • New Hampshire Fisher Cats – Wednesday, June 22, 2022

Tickets are available now and you can register for each game at:  www.itechsol.com/baseball

Don’t forget 2022 is also going to be an exciting year for all IBM i customers, with IBM having stated that the next version of the operating system will ship this year, as well as the low-end Power10 machines, will ship this year as well.  Let me tell you, there is nothing low-end about these next machines.  Be prepared to be impressed when IBM unleashes the wraps this year as promised.

To those who have been consuming our newsletters, blogs, podcasts, webinars, and seminars look for more to come in 2022. I have to ask you, if iTech Solutions isn’t your Business Partner, what is your partner doing to help you take advantage of your IBM i? Perhaps it’s time to come into the light, see what we have been doing to help other customers. Switching to iTech is as simple as a phone call or email, so why not make the switch?

I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming conference.  Please, please, please come up and introduce yourself.  I always enjoy seeing our customers and talking to them to find out what keeps them awake at night.  Until then, stay safe and I look forward to seeing everyone soon at either COMMON’s PowerUp 2022 or our baseball games.
